The R9 loudspeaker is Regas most advanced speaker to date. Offering a new dynamic four speaker set-up including bi-amping and bass attenuation. These features offer a very versatile sound and great dynamics.
Most speakers with a healthy and accurate low frequency output suffer problems in many rooms. Because of the R9's unique low frequency design techniques and the bass attenuation system, it will produce high quality low frequency in most rooms.
All the drivers in the R9 have been fully or partially designed by Rega. This has given Rega greater control over the characteristics of each speaker, making use of higher registers, removing Ferrofluid, modifying the doping process and perhaps the biggest change is to their coil characteristics.
The new bass driver although looking like a Naos driver, is completely different. It makes use of a new 8-layer voice coil in aluminium instead of copper- the upshot of this, is that it does not require a filter in the crossover and it weighs about the same as a standard two-layer copper coil. The driver has only been designed to work at frequencies below 800Hz; it's 8-layer voice coil means that it will naturally start to "Roll off" at around 400Hz.
One of the more unusual characteristics of the Rega R9 loudspeaker is the bass attenuation. Placing the speaker closer to a wall will increase the bass significantly and likewise, moving them away from a wall will reduce the bass. The attenuation link therefore is to increase or decrease the amount of bass that you want, effectively helping you 'tune' them into your room. It is a very subtle difference, but is extremely effective and if used correctly after experimentation, can really enhance your listening pleasure.
Bi-amping would not be possible, without the newly designed crossover. Because of the number of drivers in use, the crossover is quite complex. Still, as with most, if not all, Rega products we have tried to retain our philosophy that 'simplicity' is usually best! And by utilising the bi-amp system, it will allow you to use separate power amplifiers to drive the tweeters and the bass/mid range, providing greater separation and control.
Cabinet Design By far, the R9 is the biggest cabinet Rega has embarked on making; its proportions are also the most radical. The cabinet construction is a quarter wave transmission line, tuned to about 45-50Hz, with a ported box chamber on top for the bass/mid driver. The quarter wave line also contains Rega's unique Tube technology. First used on the Ela loudspeaker it has now been developed and upgraded to new levels, and now helps remove nearly all airflow restrictions through the line.
Within the line, Rega has developed a new wool support system using nylon rods.
Another important design feature, is the crossover being on the outside of the cabinet. With no internal components other than wires, (which are run down the sides of the cabinet, using our "Quattro" flat cable) there is very little to restrict the flow of air through the cabinet, and less likelihood of vibration affecting the crossover.

The system is Bi-ampable. This produces better control and sound staging.
-
The R9 Loudspeaker incorporates a 'dual tweeter system' designed to enhance higher registers.
-
The newly designed 18dB octave crossover gives tighter control of the HF drivers and produces a better tonal balance.
-
The quarter wave transmission line for the bass driver, has improved airflow using the radius section.
-
The transmission line incorporates Rega’s newly designed wool support system within the cabinet.
-
The newly designed bass driver takes advantage of its natural roll off, to eliminate the need of a crossover.
-
The bass driver has a unique eight layer designed voice coil, using an aluminium wire to reduce its weight.
-
The crossover is mounted externally, to prevent airflow restrictions within the cabinet.
-
An attenuator can also be used on the bass driver to reduce bass reflections in small rooms.
-
The internal wiring utilises Rega’s High Performance Flat Profile ‘Quattro’ speaker cable.
-
All internal wiring is run in the corners of the cabinet, to prevent airflow restrictions.
